How She Does It: Tyla Howard (She The Roar Founder)

Hi lovelies! I’m Tyla Howard, and I grew up in Zimbabwe, Africa and moved to Australia when I was young. When I’m not pouring my heart into She The Roar, or my pooch Reggie, you can find me freelancing in my web design, brand styling, and social media strategy business at tylahoward.com; volunteering at my local youth group, or in the confectionary aisle at the supermarket.

You’re a 20-something & founder of She The Roar, a Global Movement of women pursuing Christ and roaring against injustice. Tell us a little bit about how She The Roar began and your heart behind the community there!

I started She The Roararound 2 and a half years ago. It started as a tiny blog on the internet that I swear only my Mum and boyfriend would read haha! The only means of promotion I would engage in was the occasional share on my personal profile! Over time, God dropped the dream on my heart to evolve it into an online community for women. And so through buckets of herbal tea, some late night tears (who doesn’t have those every one in a while?!), and trial and error, I devised strategies that would grow She The Roar to where it is today.

She The Roaris now a global movement for the everyday woman who loves fiercely, roars against injustice, and champions the God-given purpose on her life. Within the community, there are women bringing heaven down into each other’s situations, cheering each other on, and bouncing inspiration off one another. It’s truly something special, I’m obsessed with it haha!

As a 20something, how are you learning to get comfortable in your own skin?

I think the key word in that question is learning. I believe there’s a loooong and windy journey to getting comfortable in your own skin, and I am happy with where I am at. But to be honest, I still have a long way to go!

I also realised that God has only given me enough grace to run my race. So there was no point in wasting time trying to be someone else, because God will never anoint me to be anyone but myself. So I may as well enjoy who I am, and enjoy the race and the grace I’ve been given!

Tell us some tips on how you study the Bible and encounter God’s presence?

I loooove the bible, and I looooove devotionals! However, I got the revelation recently that devotionals, worship music, podcasts and theological lectures are great, but they should only encourage our faith, not be the source of our faith.

So I had to do some re-structuring with my God-time. Now, I read a chapter of the bible in the morning, and a chapter of a different book in the bible at night. After reading the chapter, I really seek God and ask Him what He wants to reveal to me. This often looks a lot like being silent and sitting before Him.

After getting a revelation from Him, and writing it down, I then sometimes turn to a bible plan, or a devotional on the same topic, and search further. This has really helped me, as I’ve given God the full reigns of my God-times (which is how it should be!).

How have you been able to find and invest in a community of friends to do life with in person, and on social media?

I have some great "in person" friends through my local church, serving alongside them at Youth Group, and also at my University. Investing in them looks a lot like cups and cups and cups of coffee!

She The Roar is also a thriving online community where women from all corners of the globe connect and make life-long friendships. It’s so precious to see them form and to be apart of it.

She The Roar also has a Facebook Group for ANY women to join. The community provides a forum for women to share their testimonies and stories to hundreds of women across the world who genuinely care about them.

What apps, routines or tips do you love that help you stay organised with managing all of your to-dos?

For my online business, I have a customer relationship management (CRM) system. This CRM system called “Insightly” allows me to keep tabs on my clients, track my progress, assign tasks, store files, set alarms, etc. It really is the lifeline to my business, and also the crux in crushing my to-do’s!

What advice would you give a fellow gal who wants to pursue her dreams in building a loveable Brand, but is feeling like she’s hitting a wall?

Seek Jesus. Reflect yourself and your quirks through all that you do. Don’t try and fit into the mould of “this is what everybody else is doing”.

In my first year of launching She The Roar, I tried really hard to make it fit the mould. It was all pink and cutesy, and butterflies and rainbows. And don’t get me wrong! That’s all awesome! There are definitely blogs and brands that are empowering women and shaking hell that fit well with that style. But it’s not me. I’m more of a green, jungle, grit, kick-butt and roar kinda gal. So eventually, I realised that I was supressing myself just to fit in, and that’s how the new She The Roar was birthed.

So, sister, be you. PLEASE. I truly believe that if you create a movement/blog/business/brand that reflects you and your uniqueness, you will reach greatness, and that’s when Jesus will move.

Do you ever feel the pressure to have it A L L together, in a certain area, as a 20something? What truths are you learning to speak over that situation?

Absolutely! Something that I remind myself daily is that Jesus died for me, not only on my best day, but on my worst day. I am redeemed in my messiness, with my ducks out of line, and in my sin! So we can boast in the weakness as we journey with Him, because He makes us strong!

Being apart of an incredible leadership team for the Youth ministry of my local church has also taught me that people relate more to your weaknesses than your strengths. When I’ve been vulnerable, real, and have shown my messiness, I can almost hear a sigh of relief from whoever I’m with! It’s as though they’re like “PHEW! I don’t have to pretend I have it altogether anymore!”.

What’s your fav quick-prep dinner for busy weeknights?!

I go for the cheeky mac-and-cheese, or the instant microwave meals! Don’t judge me 😉

What traditions or routines are you trying to implement into your lifestyle?

Exercise! And let me tell you, I’ve really struggled with making this a “routine”. Because for some reason... my body REALLY likes sleeping in my warm, comfy, cosy, did I say comfy? bed!!

But starting my days off with exercise has really helped with gaining discipline and self-control in all aspects of my life, and sets my day up to be a productive one!
